Rohit Sharma's 81 was key for MI knockout GT in the Eliminator in Mullanpur on Friday

Mumbai Indians triumphed by 20 runs in the Eliminator against Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur on Friday to advance to Qualifier 2, where they will face Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad on June 1. Rohit Sharma's 81 helped MI post 228 before GT fluffed their lines at the end to see Sai Sudharsan's 80 go in vain.

‌Opting to bat first, Mumbai Indians stumbled early as Rohit Sharma offered two reprieves in the first three overs but seized his luck to build a commanding platform alongside Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow’s onslaught—26 off the fourth over—propelled MI to 79 without loss at the powerplay. Spin from both ends reined in the scoring briefly, and Sai Kishore struck when a sharp save by Sai Sudharsan led to Bairstow’s dismissal. Rohit’s assault resumed, reaching fifty off 28 balls, and Suryakumar Yadav celebrated with a flurry of boundaries before departing for 33 off 20. Late blitzes from Tilak Varma (25 off 11) and Hardik Pandya (22 off 9) propelled the total to 228/5.

Chasing, Gujarat Titans lost Shubman Gill to Trent Boult’s trap on just two deliveries but saw Sai Sudharsan and Kusal Mendis stitch a 66-run powerplay. Mendis’s stumps’ mishap ended his 20 off 9, yet Sudharsan motored on to a 28-ball fifty, partnering Washington Sundar for an 84-run stand. Jasprit Bumrah’s double strike turned the tide, and despite Sherfane Rutherford’s brief revival, Richard Gleeson dismissed Sudharsan for 80 off 49. With 54 needed off four, Ashwani Kumar and Bumrah conceded just nine each, and Gleeson’s miserly final over sealed a 24-run win, sending MI into Qualifier 2.
